Seeking Walls for a Historic Women’s Suffrage Mural

Portland Street Art Alliance is seeking large walls in Portland for an exciting opportunity to host a large-scale mural celebrating the women's suffrage movement as part of a prestigious national series.

Project Overview

PSAA is seeking a prominent wall location in Portland for a mural commemorating women's suffrage, featuring historically significant figures including Oregon's own Abigail Scott Duniway, known as "Oregon's Mother of Equal Suffrage." This project is part of the National Suffrage Mural Series, led by renowned co-directors Michelle Duster and Neysa Page-Lieberman of Monumenta.

Why This Matters

  • Less than 5% of public art features women or women-centered historical events

  • This free, accessible art strengthens representation of diverse women's histories

  • The project celebrates collective action toward civil rights and gender equality

  • Portland has a special connection through the project team's involvement with the Ida B. Wells School in Hillsdale

What We Offer You

  • Completely sponsored installation (no cost to property owner)

  • Professional project management by Portland Street Art Alliance

  • Full liability insurance coverage

  • Professional anti-graffiti and UV protective coating

  • Prominent recognition in all promotional materials

  • Association with a nationally recognized art series

Proven Success

This series has already created stunning murals in downtown Chicago. The Chicago installations have become celebrated landmarks, enhancing the surrounding areas and drawing visitors.

What We Need

We're looking for a wall that is:

  • At least 3 stories tall (preferably larger)

  • Prominently located and easily accessible for public viewing

  • Available for a minimum of 5 years

  • Accessible for installation equipment (lift or scaffolding)

  • Owned by a property owner willing to sign off on this quickly and easily (there will be a contract to sign, and mural permit application)

During the mural installation period, the Muralist would need:

  • Access to utilities (power, water, restrooms)

  • Space for staging and secure material storage

  • Cooperation with permitting and neighborhood coordination

Timeline: Installation will happen within the next 1-2 years, with flexible timing to accommodate for planning and fundraising.
